Digital ecology: 10 things you can do on the web to reduce your carbon footprint

Digital ecology: 10 things you can do on the web to reduce your carbon footprint

We invite you to discover here some tips to limit your ecological impact, which Actradis employees have adopted as part of our CSR approach.

On my mailbox

1. Have an empty mailbox rather than one stored on servers for nothing!
Did you know that? You can set up your mailbox so that the recycle bin is emptied each time you log out or that messages are effectively deleted after a short time (e.g. one week).

2. Choose the recipients of your emails carefully and limit the number of people you send them to. This will unclog mailboxes and reduce your digital carbon footprint!
Did you know that? You can save 10 kg eq. CO2 (as much as 80 km by car) per year by limiting the number of people to whom you send emails, at a rate of 10 emails per week and per person!

3. Close the tabs you don’t use!
Did you know that? Every web page you leave open, even if you don’t use it, consumes energy. This is because most sites are constantly sending out information and refresh themselves automatically. What’s more, 100 open tabs reduce your computer’s battery life by an hour!

4.  Choose a font that uses little ink when printing: Times New Roman or Century Gothic (classic fonts) or Ecofont (specific font).
Did you know that? These fonts use about 30% less ink than the classic Arial font. A massive application would save more than 50,000 ink cartridges per day!

5. Regularly delete conversations, folders, photos and videos from social networks and drives. This frees up space on servers that consume raw materials and energy.
Did you know that? In France, about 9% of the energy used is used to power the data centres that store all the data available on the internet.

6. Set default printouts to black & white on both sides.
Tip: Settings > Print shortcut > Print double-sided and then in Layout > Colour > B&W.

7. Do you like to spend time on media platforms? Think about reducing the resolution (480p)!
Did you know that? Watching a video for 17 min in 1080p consumes 38 g eqCO2e which is equivalent to recharging your smartphone 5 times compared to 16 g eqCO2e and 2 smartphones charged for 480p!

8. Since January 2018, all companies with more than 20 employees are obliged to sort and recycle paper waste. The introduction of a recycling system is generally very well received by employees. This is the case at Actradis with Les joyeux recycleurs!
Did you know that? Each tonne of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 26,500 litres of water. 55% of the paper supplied still comes from newly cut trees.

9. Wherever possible, use a laptop.
Tip: Laptops use up to 80% less energy than desktops. In addition, new generations of batteries are designed to save energy.

10. If you do not use a specific browser, you can contribute directly to the Ecosia project to fight against deforestation. A simple search on this browser will plant 1 tree.
Tip: Register Ecosia as your primary browser.
